Course Software Installations

The ACS staff install and maintain all of the software for the public Student Computing Clusters, Teach/Learn Centers, and SuperTech classrooms. In addition to actually installing requested programs, we also will consult with faculty members trying to select the best software for use in their courses. If you wish to discuss a planned purchase of software for use in a course, we can provide you with much expertise in selecting applications which will meet your teaching goals and our technological requirements. Please contact David Blezard, ACS Manager, at x2-0213 for more information as to how we may help you.

The following policies and procedures have been set to clarify and support the processes by which software can be installed on computers managed by the Academic Computing Systems (ACS) group, either for standard UNH courses or for outside groups who are using ACS-managed facilities.

Due to both security restrictions in place on all ACS-managed systems and software licensing restrictions, only ACS staff can install software programs on the computers and servers that we maintain. While we will make every effort to assist you in making your software available, we do occasionally encounter poorly designed and written software applications that are incompatible with our computer systems, security, or networking environment. We welcome questions regarding software selection and/or purchasing when you are planning what you might wish to use for your course and can provide advice at that time.

Also, please note that if you wish to have multiple students using a piece of software at the same time, you must purchase multiple copies of the program or arrange for a licensing agreement from the software publisher allowing multiple users. Again, we will be happy to assist in making these arrangements in any way possible.

General Procedures

  1. A complete Software Request is required before any new or updated program will be installed. A complete software request includes:
    • Completed Software Request Form
    • Media or a URL for access to the software to be installed
    • Licensing information including proof of license ownership and any necessary license keys
    • Installation instructions
These items should be delivered to the main Academic Technology Desk on Floor G, Dimond Library.
  2. Once all of the complete Software Request is received, software will be installed by ACS staff according to the following time frame:
    • For academic clients (i.e., for a course in the UNH Time & Room Schedule), software will be installed within 1 week.
    • For non-academic clients, we required 3 weeks notice. For less than 3 weeks notice, there will be an additional fee (see below).
Particularly complex software installations may require additional resources and time to install in which case, ACS staff will contact the client as soon as these needs are realized to discuss the situation.
  3. Upon completion of the installation, the client will be contacted and given the opportunity to test the software with or without the presence of ACS staff. ACS staff can only test software to the point that it appears to be installed and launching properly. We cannot test the particular functions or features due to a lack of experience with the programs. Please allow sufficient time to test your software before it is needed for use by your students.
  4. Materials will be made available for client to pickup at the main Academic Technology desk on Floor G of Dimond Library, or they can be returned via campus mail, if requested.

Fees for Non-Academic Use

Installation will be charged at the rate of $1.00 per software title per computer with a minimum fee of $30.00. For example, 3 software programs installed in room with 30 student computers and 1 instruction station is a total of 3 x 31 x $1 = $93.

A software title will generally be considered to be one installer or setup program that needs to be run regardless of how many files, applications, or program items are installed or created. There is no fee for installation of data files associated with an application.

Rush Charges

For non-academic clients who do not provide 3 weeks time between delivery of the complete set of Software Request materials and the first date on which the software is needed, there will be an additional surcharge as follows:

Renewals and Removal

Software renewal notices will be sent to the individual who placed the original Software Request before the start of the fall and spring semesters. The renewal form must be returned by the listed deadline in order to have the software remain installed for the coming semester. We will not need installation materials, etc. again under most circumstances. If you will no longer be using a piece of software, simply note that on the renewal form, and we will remove it from our systems.
