Microsoft Campus Agreement Details

Windows - Microsoft Office 2013 Installation

System Requirements - Windows 7, or later; 1 GB RAM, 4 G hard drive space
Note: Windows SP and Vista are not supported for Office 2013 and will not function.
Includes: Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook, Publisher, InfoPath, Groove, OneNote, Communicator, SharePoint Workspace

Note: The "UNH-Public" network does not allow Windows file sharing (SMB/CIFS) connections. You must be on a wired Ethernet connection for this to work, or you must use the UNH VPN or "UNH-Secure", if you are on wireless.

If you are installing from off-campus or via wireless using the UNH VPN, note that you may need to use an alternate method to access the server using your AD credentials. If you receive an error about access beind denied, please see the supplemental instructions at the end of this document.

32-bit vs. 64-bit Version Details

Microsoft makes both 32-bit and 64-bit versions of office, but they strongly recommend that users use the 32-bit version and only use the 64-bit one if there is a very specific need. UNH IT is making both versions available, but we also recommend that you stick to the 32-bit version of Office, even if you have a 64-bit version of the Windows operation system. When using the 64-bit version are possible compatibility issues with third-party add-ons to Office as well as other issues that can arise.

For more details from Microsoft on this issue, please see Microsoft TechNet article 618792.

Office 2013 Setup
  1. From the Start Menu, select Run.
  2. Enter the following UNC path:
    \\academic.unh.edu\office$
  3. If necessary, login with your AD credentials. You may need to enter your username prefixed by AD\ (e.g. AD\djb1).
  4. When the Office$ window appears, open the Office 2013 folder.
  5. There are separate installation folders for the 32-bit and 64-bit releasese of Office 2013. We recommend that you use the 32-bit version. Open that folder unless you have a specific reason to use the 64-bit one.
  6. Run the Setup.exe program in the folder of the version you opened.
  7. Proceed through the installation process. We recommend you accept the defaults as presented.
  8. Close the Office$ window when the setup program is complete.

You can get future updates to Office 2013 from the Microsoft Office Update website or through the Microsoft Update feature built into the Windows OS.

Supplemental Instructions to Map a Network Drive

In some situations, you may not be able to access the Office share on the ACADEMIC server using your AD credentials. This is usually because you do not login to your computer normally using an AD account. This is especially true of users with laptops or who are off-campus. The following steps should force your computer to connect to the server as your AD identity so that you can be granted access. Use them in place of steps 1 through 3 above.

  1. Right-click on Computer from the Start Menu and select Disconnect Network Drive.
  2. In the list of connected network shares, look for any that reference the server \\academic. There are likely to be connections, if you have already tried the standard instructions and had them not work. Since you can only connect to the server as one identity at a time, you most close these connections before proceeding.
Select the connections to \\academic and click the OK button to close these connection.
  3. Right-click on Computer from the Start Menu and select Map Network Drive.
  4. Select any unused drive letter in the Drive: field. The default Z: drive is just fine.
  5. Enter the path \\academic.unh.edu\office$ in the Folder: field. Do not click the Finish button or press Return yet!
  6. Make sure that the Reconnect at logon box is not checked.
  7. Click on the link that says Connect as a different user name.
  8. In the Connect As... dialog box that appears, enter your your username prefixed by AD\ (e.g. AD\djb1), then enter your AD account password.
  9. Click OK in the Connect As... dialog box followed by Finished in the Map Network Drive dialog box.
When the Office$ share window appears proceed with the normal installation instructions above.
